Discourse 152

The Things Which I Say

The Things Which I Say – Luke 6:46 (KJV) – Monday, April 1, 2019

Luke 6:46 (KJV) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

I chuckle to myself just about every time I sit down to write and prepare my discourse. Why? Well, have you noticed a theme that seems to run through all my discourses? That’s right, I write on such a tiny verses with only a few words! Believe me when I say, I didn’t select this verse, or any of the verses that I talk on. Now, I can hear someone say, okay, how do you pick the particular verse?

When I sit down and do my daily school work, GEC Bible School, which is apart of our church, the one that is brand new here in Boulder, Colorado… also the missionary work that I pray that some will take serious in their giving outreach.

The ground that needs to be prepared

Building a new ministry is funding intensive, because of the ground that needs to be prepared, the digging deep into the city’s ground (people of the city), (not the physical dirt…LOL), establishing a pier network for the foundation, which is founded upon rock (that means Jesus Christ!), and I can go on and on at all the enormous amounts of pre-activity that is required prior to launching a new work of the Lord. I for one am shocked and a greatly overwhelmed.

However, because of the Spirit of God, things seem to work out in favour to what the Lord is looking to build here in this amazing city! By the way, our Bible School can be taken anywhere you live… it’s that simple and elegant!

What I just finished saying, actually relates to much of what the verse for today’s discourse is all about. And it also is a theme that is in the 86 verses of today’s school work. God is so good, isn’t he?

Laid the foundation on a rock

I think what I want to do is include a few more verses to fill out this one in Luke 6:46. Let’s see, well add… but wait, let’s first add the verse we’re working on…

Luke 6:46 (KJV) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

Luke 6:47 (KJV) Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

Luke 6:48 (KJV) He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

Luke 6:49 (KJV) But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Good treasure of his heart

There we go, that looks good. What do you think? Does it cover a theme or topic pretty well? Of course it does… and also please note to read the entire context of what Jesus is saying and doing and teaching in the many verses prior and following these selected verses. Okay?

It might be a good idea to go back again and re-read slowly the verses Luke 6:46-49.

I’m sitting here with me tea, and keep thinking that I need to add a few more verses here, like the ones just before this one for today (Luke 6:46). I think I will…

Luke 6:43 (KJV) For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

Luke 6:44 (KJV) For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

Luke 6:45 (KJV) A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

And this is our verse here… Luke 6:46 (KJV) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

Gathered around us when we speak

Now, I can see a clear running theme. Can you? Let’s go over verse 46…

“And why call ye me,” The idea here is asking a rather blunt and honest question to the people gathered around Jesus, or for that matter, gathered around us when we speak truth, or preach the gospel and minister the Holy Spirit… see what I mean?

Please note that the word “ye” is a form for you for which in this context is plural, meaning many many people, or all of you combined together, the whole lot of you… “ye” is plural… (“thee” is singular, “thou” is singular)… it’s important to note this, because he’s talking to a crowd and not to just one single person in the crowd. This is the beauty of the King James Bible!

Add yourself to my daily prayer

There’s a way to be included in my daily prayer. At the end of this discourse there’s an easy method to add yourself. This might be one more way that I can be ‘Touching People For Heaven’. Knowing that someone is praying for you is very comforting. God works through all kinds of people and things to bring about what he wants. God knows what’s going on. He’s the boss!

Asking the Holy Spirit to revel

There are many scriptures that tell stories of people calling Jesus, Lord, Lord, and then you read Jesus saying, I don’t know who you are. Or, I never knew you. Or, Depart from me… Or, why call me, Lord, Lord?

Jesus is so subtle sometimes and if we don’t read slowly and deliberately, we can miss the point Jesus was conveying. Like right here, after he said, “And why call ye me,” …he then said, “Lord, Lord,” …wow, to me that is saying something of great importance! The person calling, said Lord twice in a loud and authoritative voice, with an expectation of being heard and then being answered! Sort of a demanding nature, don’t you think? To get that out of these few words takes a little mediation and some asking the Holy Spirit to revel what is actually being said; so that we don’t miss anything!

Make the Word of God the STANDARD

Look at this verse here… Matthew 7:21 (KJV) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

I mean really, how many times have we heard people say, or preachers say, oh, that’s not what it really means, or that’s not what it’s actually saying… to me this is so dumb! It says what it says! Just read it for what it is and stop trying to twist and remake the scriptures to fit the situation. Make the Word of God the STANDARD and live by it! I know, it sounds easy to say, and to write it!

So the question is

Now we can take another look at our verse… Luke 6:46 (KJV) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

Do you see it now? That’s right, “do not the things which I say”… these are some very, very, important words that require our attention! So the question is, do we or do we not do the things, all the things, that Jesus taught, as per recorded in our New Testament… along with the current and valid scriptures of the Old Testament?

Know the answer to this question

Possibly the first thing to consider is, what are the things which Jesus said? That seems like a good question. What do you think? Probably the only way we are going to know the answer to this question is to read thoroughly the entire Holy Bible! Yea, I know, that’s a lot of reading to just find out what things we’re suppose to do! But maybe not… yea, if we just read thoroughly the verses surrounding our verse today, we might just be able to begin to get the concepts of what Jesus wants us to do… i.e., what “things”… What do you think?

What I see that jumps off the pages for me is “FAITH” and what faith is like. The portion of scriptures for today’s school work is, Luke 5:17 through Luke 7:14 and there are about twelve instances that describe what doing faith is… as you already know, faith is an action word; not a sit and do nothing word, nor a word about thinking or meditating, nor even dreaming about what it is you want to do! I know, I laughed to when I wrote this! It sure seems obvious when we take “FAITH” out, and take a look at it clearly!

TRUST JESUS

You see, just living for Jesus is not doing the things that Jesus said to do. Nor is just reading your bible. Not even just going to church is doing what Jesus said to do. Whenever the world teaches us something, we can safely assume that that thing is what we are NOT to do! If you know the scriptures, you can immediately see what I’m talking about. The world hates Jesus. The world is against the Spirit and the Spirit is against the world! Wow, that sounds very tough and cruel. But the world is full of evil and by doing evil we miss what Jesus wants us to do!

Here’s a very simple, personal and real example… giving! Yesterday, Sunday, I was on the streets preaching at Pearl and 28th with my preaching banner. On my way back home, I had the opportunity to witness to a man walking down Pearl Street near 22nd street or so… I had my TRUST JESUS shirt on and my JESUS CHRIST IS THE SON OF GOD ball cap, along with my 4’x4′ banner that was rolled up… I was headed home! After talking for a moment to this man, he asked if I could spare a dollar? I said no, I didn’t have a dollar on me. (All I had were 20’s!) Man, was I convicted of not doing the things Jesus said to do!!! I got home and vowed that will never happen again, Lord willing! I’m getting a stack of one dollar bills so that I’ll always have them when I go out!

He didn’t ask for a thousand dollars

Look at this verse… “Luke 6:30 (KJV) Give to every man that asketh of thee; …”

In the story I just told, did that man ask of me? Yes, of course he did. And I did not the things which Jesus said to do! Is that right? I mean really, he didn’t ask for a thousand dollars; no, he asked for a dollar!

When we disobey; knowingly or unknowingly (after we find out we messed up), what did Jesus say that we are to do? Do you know the answer? Yes that’s right! We are to REPENT! Which is to stop sinning and sin no more, and to change our mind to that which Jesus want us to have, and to turn from doing the wrong again… sort of like when your hiking, or walking or driving somewhere; take a different way, a different path, a different street… and NOT do that again!

There’s more to it

We can also ask Jesus for forgiveness. Because in my little story above, I can also say that I lied to the man! Can you see how by not doing the things that Jesus has said to do, we can really mess up and compound the problem, and fall into sin? I mean, this may sound like a simple thing of doing what Jesus said, but there’s more to it! Much more!

I’m going to stop here though, because my mind is on a freeway of information and if I don’t pull over here, I may go for another hour!

Pray

Let me pray, “Lord, thank you for showing us your word and all the things that you want us to do that is in it. I believe we realize that we don’t need to do the things that are not in your word. Just because some one says something that we should do, that sounds good, but you teach us to go back to your word and look it up and make sure it’s in your word. Then we can truthfully do with a clean heart all that you have said for us to do, in this life, and the life to come! We love you Jesus! In your name we pray! Amen.

All right folks… let’s go out and do the things which Jesus says to do!

God bless you…

Have a great day…

About JOHN CHOQUE.

THANK YOU for your faith. I preach, minister, and build from a perspective of living on the road as a trucker for most of my life, forty years and well over three million miles. The road is a hard lifestyle and thus builds a hard preaching style. Being direct and having a mindset that says, I may never see you again, puts grit into my ministry. People either like it or they don't. Turn onto JESUS! Because, this may be your last chance! We just don't know what's around the next bend in the road... or in our life, is that right? Now, simply call out to JESUS like the Holy Bible says in Acts 2:21 KJB.

How many times have we wondered, what are the things we should be doing for the Lord? What things does Jesus want me to do? I think this verse of Luke 6:46 is a great starting point to answer our questions! -JC
